Lamb's to the Slaughter...

...or maybe they'll do the slaughtering - i suspect it'll depend on my notoriously fickle dice.

Another part of the New York contingent is Lamb's artillery company. Resplendent in blue faced buff they make a refreshing change to the blue and red combo of most other AWI artillery units.

I like artillery - both from a gaming and an aesthetic point of view. Each artillery base is a little diorama in it's own right (or can be if you put a little bit of thought into animating and composing the crew). That said, i've been lazy again and the crew here are standard Hinchliffe castings with just a couple of minor tweeks. The guns are hybrids - Foundry carriages with Hinchliffe barrels.

My AWI rebels probably have more than enough artillery already but i am tempted to do some more.

Very, very nice! And there was me thinking I won't be thinking of tricornes again!
I am even re-thinking black undercoat now! (Just once you understand-for experimental purposes only...)

Thanks Matt, i must admit i was rather pleased with them - the buff and blue seem to work very well together.

Tricornes/cocked hats are of course the coolest hats in military history...matched perhaps only by sombreros - and you've done Mexico already, so....

I admire your lack of restraint in tackling multiple projects at once.....8-)

As for white undercoat - come over to the dark side...er, light side... I'll certainly be interested to see how any experiment goes (i've never tried acrylic washes on white.... assuming that's what you were thinking...).

cheers.

DC,

Another beautiful little unit, you capture that 'Gilder' touch so well, I find myself studying your full size images for technique! Any chance you could just describe this method in detail? for example I love those faces!! I know you said that you used enamels (this method just dont work as well with acrylics, I've tried it!) but could you give us a run down of which colours you used taking the above artillery unit as an example? I'd appreciate that for one :-) I'm an experienced (20 year) painter and pretty good over black undercoats with acrylics BUT I'm tired of it and your figures just look so refleshingly clean, crisp and bright!! I am SERIOUSLY considering giving this a go despite having a couple of hundred quids worth of Foundry paint system acrylics..........it may be time to take that step back!!!!

Great blog.

I was thinking of trying all sorts of methods with a white undercoat! I fully endorse Lee's request for a "How To" on the technique you use.

Well a quick Google has produced a supplier of the full range of Humbrol matt enamels at a very reasonable £1.25 per tin! Most of the 'old' range is still in production. Matt enamels/gloss varnish? I was thinking back to some of my old (long sold off) figures painted that way and I'm convinced they were some of the best I ever did :-)

Thank again for an inspirational blog,

Lee.

Gents,

I've had a few requests to post something on painting (the world has gone mad!) so i'll do so. I'll post something on how Lamb's were painted asap next week.

Meanwhile Lee you might want to hang fire on splurging a fortune on humbrols - i have very mixed feelings regarding the matt range, i actually use a lot of gloss and satin colours. More next week....
cheers all.

Thank you DC, I'll look forward to seeing that :-) I do remember you said the Humbrols were not as they used to be, so I'll hang fire until you describe your methods then maybe I'll give it a go.

Cheers,

Lee.
