Not Shiny, but definitely Unfashionable

Predictably the Perry range gets all the press these days, but for me the most exciting Sudan range remains Gilder's (for Connoisseur). These chaps were participants in Gilder's legendary campaign 20 years ago that graced the pages of WI and WW, and will soon be returning to their spiritual home (that's N. Yorks - not east Africa).

These are all Connoisseur figures apart from a couple of shy Hinchliffe's (nice delicate figures, but small compared to Connoisseur) amongst the grass, and the crouching bloke (from the almost invisible Britannia range - the figures from which are both very attractive and well researched).

More Connoisseur Sudan figures soon.

About once a year I get to play with Gilder's own army and i marvel at some of the conversion work that he did on things like camels (reins replaced with wire, a couple of dying camels crashing to the ground). The collection was bought lock, stock and barrel by Keith L. here in the States.

Really interesting basing. I have to say I like it dont know if it is practicable but, I like it.

I'm guessing the transition between the highlight and shadow was achieved with an oil wash, it works well.

I have several units of Gilder Ansar/Fuzzies and loads of the Brits/Egyptians. Love all of them. I am a total fan-boy of Connoisseur and agree that these still stir the heart.

Regarding the basing, it fit perfectly with the WHC rules (and works with my game too: Battles for Empire). This is grand manner gaming but slightly on the cheap; the bases were all supposed to be '10' figs but the grass and rocks made it possible to stretch a collection that already numbered in the many hundreds.

Joy.

I'm a bit biased towards the Old Glory Sudan range but these would be a very close second choice. Indeed if I were starting I'd mix theconnoiseur, Hincliff and OG indisriminately. Britannia too if still out there. I'd only miss out ... what was that range PPPPP
